A lesson in the value of valor. It’s 168 B.C. in Jerusalem, and the Greek culture has influenced the city. King Antiochus sends a statue of himself to the Jewish Temple inside Jerusalem’s walls. Judah Maccabee tells the King’s men the Jews will never put the statue in the Temple because they will never bow down and accept the Greek gods as their own. This infuriates King Antiochus, and he orders his army to kill anyone claiming to be a Jew. A small group led by Judah Maccabee flees to the mountains and sets up camp. The Greek army strips the Temple of all valuables and places the statue in its walls as a reminder that Zeus sees, hears and knows all things. When the Greek soldiers arrive at the camp, the Jews are ready and use rocks, water, logs and the few weapons they have to defend themselves. With valor, the Maccabees overcome the soldiers and return to Jerusalem triumphantly. After crumbling the statue of King Antiochus, they restore the Temple to magnificence and light the menorah in celebration with the little oil supply they have. This celebration became known as the Feast of Dedication, and today we know it as Hanukkah. Includes 48-page activity book.
