A lesson in the value of
humility. Leonardo da Vinci is invited to Milan to begin a painting in the refectory at the monastery. It takes him two years to
complete “The Last Supper.” While Leonardo da Vinci is in Milan, he acquires his first pupil, Salai, whom he catches trying to steal money
from his change purse. Leonardo and Salai return to Florence to find a culture of “new thinkers”—painters and sculptors—who
believe that passion ignites creation. This new culture includes a young sculptor, Michelangelo, whom Salai begins to idolize. Soon
Leonardo da Vinci is hired by the palace to do “The Battle of Anghari” on the wall of the building that will also house a sculpture by
Michelangelo. Just before he begins this new work, Leonardo learns of the disrepair of “The Last Supper.” After Leonardo finishes
this new painting, he attempts to heat the paint into the wall, only to see it melt. Feeling like a failure, Leonardo da Vinci returns to Milan
and is welcomed by admiring, aspiring young art students who are doing reproductions of “The Last Supper.” At last Leonardo
feels worthy of their praise. Includes 48-page activity book.
